Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak Compares Ethereum to the Valuable Tech Brand

Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple has often been revered in the tech-communities because of his deep insights and penetrating thoughts. This time, he is making a bold statement in the WeAreDevelopers tech conference in Vienna. Delivering a speech at the conference, he compared Ethereum blockchain to the early stages of Apple’s development.

He seemed positive on the blockchain’s future and commented that in the nick of time, this project could become as influential as Apple. He said, “Ethereum interests me because it can do things and because it’s a platform.”

Here is what he had to say about the project:

“Well, it’s a platform. When we started Apple, our Apple 2 computer was a platform.

Here’s all the documentation, open source, you can see how you develop parts, look at the examples we have done. How to develop software, how to modify the software in here.

It was a platform for others, so thousands of companies started up. Sometimes high school kids started their own company, and then they’d put up little ads in little electronic journals, ads for my product, for the Apple 2.

Everybody in the world was advertising for us and we didn’t have to. So, platforms is how the world can grow by opening up to millions of other smart people.

The product that changed my life the most from Apple isn’t the iPhone, it’s the App Store. The apps that are in the app store. Third party apps developed by all the people with all the ideas all over the place. And that’s an example of a platform.”

Wozniak was an early investor in cryptocurrencies, per Forbes. However, he later moved away from the world of cryptocurrencies, citing that he did not want to trade actively and lived a simpler life. The life of a trader, per Woz, is complicated as he has to check for prices all the time. This is not one of his priorities in life.

He also says that he still owns 1 BTC and 2 Ethereum coins to “experiment with paying for different things” and check the real-world use cases of these currencies. In the Money 20/20 conference in Vegas last year, he said that bitcoin is much better than the US dollar and gold.

Talking about the system and the changing tech world, he said that humans also have an innate need to create new things. He noted that a developer or an engineer has to understand this basic need and becoming an evolving individual himself. If the engineer or developer is uncomfortable with change, he won’t be able to evolve with the times.

In his opening speech on Thursday, he also looked convinced that blockchain will be driving the future of technology. He called blockchain “the next major IT revolution that is about to happen.” The tech stalwart also believes that both blockchain and cryptocurrencies are still in their nascent form and will reach their zenith in a decade from now.

After his departure from active roles at Apple, Wozniak has founded the Woz University. This coding academy has 31 centers across the US.
